20% project

Pick up a 20% project. Talk to your manager to see if they would allow you to spend 20% of your work time contributing to another team’s project.

My team currently focuses primarily on frontend development, but I’ve always wanted to explore backend development. Fortunately, my company supports 20% projects, and an Excel sheet listing various side projects from different teams was shared with the engineers.

I seized the opportunity to work on a backend project with another team. Looking back, it was a wise decision.

Shortly after I started my 20% project, my main project was cancelled due to business reasons, and I was assigned minor tasks such as code refactoring and cleanup. Since it was coming to the end of the year, there wasn’t any new initiatives and I shifted my focus to working full-time on my “20% project.”

My “20% project” allowed me to learn new skills, get to know engineers from other teams, and work with C++ for the first time. Therefore, I totally recommend picking up a 20% project within your company if you want to do more or feel…
