The first time that I recognised my feet were bigger than my peers was when I was around eleven years old. I was at a Bata shoe outlet with my mum, hoping to buy a brand-new pair of white school shoes for the new term. I was starting to outgrow my current pair of white shoes, which I had bought just a year ago, and needed new ones.
“There you go, size 6 (US). This is the biggest shoe size for this shoe model that we have.” The shopkeeper tells me as he hands me a pair of white shoes to try on.
I flash an awkward smile, hold my breath, and gingerly slide my feet in. I had been eyeing this particular shoe design for quite a while and I prayed that it would fit me.
Alas, it fits me just right. Phew!
Since then, my feet have continued to grow and expand until puberty ended. Currently, I wear shoes of 8.5–9 US or 40–41 UK size. For sports shoes, I tend to buy a US size 10 so that I have more room for my toes when I am running around.
