Within just two weeks, both companies I had previously worked for announced layoffs.

The first was a large, multinational bank, a place I had assumed would be one of the most stable employers, given its deep cash reserves and decades-long presence in the market. So when my ex-colleague messaged me about someone from my previous team being let go, it came as a complete shock. According to local reports, the bank cited plans to shift headcount to India as the reason behind the layoffs. It was a stark reminder that even seemingly immovable institutions are now subject to global restructuring trends. I also couldn’t help but wonder if I would have been a victim, had I not changed companies.

The second layoff, at a company in the internet recruiting space, felt different. In hindsight, the signs were there. A month prior, the CEO had stepped down and the former CEO returned to take the reins. With leadership changes often comes reorganisation, and unfortunately, layoffs tend to follow. Still, it was still a shocker the morning I found out about it when scrolling my LinkedIn feed. I thought that by now, since being laid off in 2023, things would have settled down.

It’s been a strange experience, witnessing two very different companies make similar decisions in such a short span of time. It made me think about how unpredictable the job market has become, even in industries that once seemed recession-proof and mighty.

On a personal level, it stirred up a mix of emotions from frustration to uncertainty. It reminded me how important it is to constantly acquire new skills, have multiple income streams, be in tune with the job market and prepare for the unexpected.

It is indeed a difficult period of time, with the job environment being so hostile and uncertain.

In the meantime, it’s important not to be overly consumed by negative thoughts, and to remind ourselves of what truly matters in life.

Our careers do not define us.

Rather, it’s how we cultivate relationships with others and appreciate the little things that give life its meaning. We must be careful not to get pulled into a spiral of negativity, but instead aspire to adapt to the new changes and seek out the moments, people, and experiences that bring us happiness and hope.
